Vision Australia (VA) is a leading national provider of blindness and low vision services in Australia, who work in partnership with Australians who are blind or have low vision, to help them achieve the possibilities they choose in life. VA are a not-for-profit organisation and a major participant and partner in the international blindness community.
VA engaged Alpha as Project Manager and Superintendent for the refurbishment and fitout of their 3 level 7,920sqm office building in Glenferrie Road, Kooyong.
As the national head office, implementing best practice in accessible design for the building was a key success factor. All key project design team members undertook an intensive blindness and low vision awareness and information session during the early design phase, which set the tone and challenged many of the conventional design and construction methodologies.
The project was undertaken in two (2) stages, in a live environment maintaining the national network, with a significant portion of the 240 VA staff remaining in the building to maintain business as usual, and daily attendance from VA clients within the blind and low vision community.
Due to its age, a building compliance upgrade was required throughout the building. In addition to the workplace areas, a public conference centre, retail store and the re-branding of the site and external painting were also delivered.
